The United Kingdom begins testing the Dragonfire combat laser weapon
The Laser Directed Energy Program in the United Kingdom has launched a series of laser weapon tests Dragonfire.
What we know
Participants of the program have begun testing a combat laser to confirm the accuracy and power of the Dragonfire installation. The debut test proved the system's ability to track targets in the air and water.
This phase used a low-power laser QinetiQ. Experts are now preparing Dragonfire for the second stage of testing. The next phase will focus on testing a high power setup.
The purpose of developing Dragonfire is to create a weapon that can provide protection for ground forces and ships from missiles or artillery shells. The idea is that the new system will destroy missiles in the air at big distances from the target.
