Ukrainian Defence Forces destroy Buk surface-to-air missile system with $100,000 M982 Excalibur precision-guided munition

Today we wrote how a Russian Buk-M1-2 surface-to-air missile system was destroyed by an unknown weapon. Another self-propelled launcher was eliminated with a high-precision US munition.

Here's What We Know

The Russian army has lost nearly three dozen Buk surface-to-air missile launchers of various modifications since 24 February 2022. For example, the not-so-new but relatively rare Buk-M2 has recently been hit.

The video above shows a self-propelled launcher being hit using the M982 Excalibur precision-guided munition. It can be used by 155 calibre howitzers, including the towed M777.

The Excalibur has been developed by BAE Systems and Raytheon. The projectile can hit targets up to 40km away with an accuracy of 2m. At FY2022 prices, the cost per M982 precision-guided munition is approximately $100,000.
