The European Union may create a unified air defense system

A unified air defense system may appear in the European Union. This was announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Here's What We Know

According to the Chancellor of Germany, a common air defense system will be more effective and cheaper than separate air defense solutions in each country of the European Union. Olaf Scholz made a statement to this effect during his speech at Charles University (Prague).

The project of a unified air defense system is being considered against the background of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. The idea has interested a number of European countries, including Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Scandinavian states (Denmark, Sweden and Norway).

In the issue of air defense, Germany will play the main role. Scholz stressed that the German government intends to make significant investments in the sector in the coming years. Moreover, the funds for development of the air defense system may come from the €100 billion that will be allocated for modernization of the Bundeswehr.
