U.S. approves $323.3 million sale of 98 Sidewinder and JSOW missiles to Finland

Finland will be able to purchase AIM-9X and AGM-154 aircraft missiles. The potential deal has been approved by the U.S. State Department.

Here's What We Know

Finland wants to buy 48 AGM-154 Joint Stand Off Weapon (JSOW) modest surface-to-air guided bombs. Finnish authorities have also submitted a request for the purchase of 40 AIM-9X Sidewinder level Block II air-to-air missiles.

The value of the potential deal is $323.3 million. In addition to the Sidewinder and JSOW the contract includes four tactical guidance units AIM-9X Block II, CATM and DATM training missiles, containers, software and auxiliary equipment.

Note that the AIM-9X is the most advanced version of the Sidewinder missile. Portugal recently announced the purchase of 18 units of AIM-9X for the fourth generation fighters F-16 Fighting Falcon. Also in 2022, Italy ordered a "modest number" of missiles for the F-35 Lightning II.
