Norway purchases StormBreaker smart bombs for F-35 fighters

Fifth generation fighters F-35, which are in service with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, will soon receive smart bombs StormBreaker.

What we know

This information was officially confirmed by the Ministry of Defense of Norway. The ministry does not specify exactly how many bombs it plans to buy from the U.S. Defense Department.

The StormBreaker weighs more than 90 kilograms and is designed to destroy targets at distances up to 110 kilograms. A key feature of Raytheon's development is a three-mode guidance system with infrared head, millimeter range radar and semi-active laser guidance.

The U.S. company has already certified StormBreaker for use in F-35 fighters, which, by the way, can carry four bombs in each compartment. By the end of the year, Raytheon plans to complete certification for the United States Navy's F/A-18 deck aircraft.
