The U.S. Department of Defense has announced an increase in the stockpile and production of GMLRS rockets.
Here's What We Know
Pentagon officials visited several plants that produce GMLRS missiles. William LaPlante, Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition Affairs, said the United States will continue to help Ukraine and is doing everything possible to accelerate weapons production.
Nearly $400 million has already been allocated for restocking of HIMARS and GMLRS, and $200 million will be invested in the next few months to expand and accelerate production. Corresponding contracts will be signed in the fall of 2022 and early 2023.
Recall that the GMLRS are 227 mm caliber high precision guided missiles for the M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers. The launch range ranges from 15 km to 84 km. One container in the M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS holds six missiles.
