NVIDIA has developed a simplified version of the advanced A100 chip to avoid restrictions and continue shipping to China

NVIDIA has decided not to lose revenue from GPU shipments to China, or at least try to minimize losses as much as possible.

Here's What We Know

The October sanctions, in fact, completely restricted the export of advanced chips to China if they use U.S. technology. The new restrictions could have caused a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars for NVIDIA. Therefore, it has developed a new chip specifically for the Chinese market.

The graphics processor is called A800 and is a simplified version of the A100. According to Reuters, the GPU has already appeared on the website of NVIDIA's distributor in China. The connection speed of NVLink has been reduced in comparison to A100 by a third - from 600 GB / s to 400 GB / s. This will have a negative impact on data center performance.

According to Reuters, the A800 chip goes into production in the third quarter of 2022. NVIDIA would not admit whether it has consulted with the U.S. Department of Commerce on the creation of the new GPU. The agency declined to comment. Chinese server makers and NVIDIA's local distributor also remain silent for now.
