Amazon is cutting staff - a total of 10,000 employees will be laid off, with the Luna and Alexa divisions being the first to be affected

Amazon employees have begun receiving layoff notices. According to the New-York Times, the e-commerce giant intends to cut 10,000 employees. The company has not yet commented on the situation.

Here's What We Know

The first to be affected were the specialists who worked on the development of the virtual assistant Alexa and the cloud platform Luna. Informed sources say that Amazon has cut the number of contractors who were responsible for hiring employees for the Fire TV media player development department and for divisions related to marketing. In addition, the company declined to renew contracts with some employees and canceled a number of scheduled interviews.

Amazon executives have already repeatedly stated the need to cut costs in various ways, including refusing to increase staff, stop building new warehouses and closing pilot projects. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company was able to double its workforce from 798,000 to 1.6 million. This was due to a surge in demand for Amazon's services due to the global quarantine. But now the company is forced to lay off staff.
