Internet provider fined $10,000 in the US

The US has fined cable internet provider Jefferson County Cable (JCC) in Ohio $10,000 for making false claims about broadband access.

Here's What We Know

Jefferson County Cable (JCC) admitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that it falsely claimed to have fibre optic service in a region it did not yet cover and submitted false coverage data to prevent competitors from receiving government grants to serve the area.

The cable internet provider's offence was discovered through the actions of its competitors and the FCC's mapping system. The head of Smart Way Communications discovered the provider's false claims and filed complaints with the FCC.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has required the cable internet service provider (JCC) to create a special plan that will cover a number of actions and policies aimed at ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. This plan should include internal procedures that will allow the company to detect, avoid and remedy any possible violations.

In addition, JCC must provide regular training to its employees on compliance and FCC requirements. The company is also required to submit reports on its compliance with these requirements for two years.
