In Poland, four soldiers are accused of negligence that led to the temporary loss of a shipment of 240 anti-tank mines.

Here's What We Know

A spokesman for the Poznan District Prosecutor's Office said the suspects face up to five years in prison. None of the soldiers pleaded guilty.

The mines were transported by rail from Hajnówka in eastern Poland to an ammunition depot in Mosty in western Poland between 4 and 7 July 2024. Due to incomplete unloading, the train with the mines continued to move.

On 16 July 2024, they were found in a carriage at the IKEA Industry Poland warehouse and handed over to the police.

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that the necessary measures had been taken after the incident, including explanatory and corrective procedures, inspections and training of personnel.

The dismissal of the Head of the Logistics Inspectorate, Major General Artur Kępczynski, announced on 9 January 2025, is likely to be related to this incident. One of the possible reasons for the loss of the batch of mines was the incorrect number of ammunition in the documents.

Recently, we also reported that the Polish military had cancelled the purchase of Kryl wheeled self-propelled artillery systems. The Polish Ministry of National Defence's response to a parliamentary inquiry stated that, based on the experience of the war in Ukraine, the country will focus on building strike capabilities using Krab self-propelled howitzers and South Korean K9 self-propelled artillery systems.
