This week, Google removed from its website a promise not to use artificial intelligence (AI) to create weapons or surveillance, Bloomberg reported.

Here's What We Know

The company updated its AI principles page, removing the "Apps We Will Not Pursue" section that was available as recently as last week. In response to a request for comment, Google pointed to a new blog post about "responsible AI," which talks about the need for companies, governments and organisations to work together to create AI that protects people, fosters global growth and supports national security.

Google's updated principles emphasise working to "mitigate unintended or harmful consequences and prevent unfair bias", as well as aligning the company with international law and human rights.

In recent years, Google's contracts with the US and Israeli militaries have sparked internal employee protests, despite the company's claims that its AI is not being used to harm people. However, the Pentagon's head of artificial intelligence says some AI models are speeding up the US military's kill chain.
