Devolver Digital, an indie publisher known for its original and often atypical games, has revealed the secret of its financial stability by naming the most profitable intellectual property. According to the presentation for investors, it is Cult of the Lamb, which has brought the company more than $90 million in revenue over the entire period of its existence.

Here's What We Know

This unexpected leader has bypassed numerous Devolver Digital franchises, including such well-known games as Astroneer (over $80 million), Stronghold (over $50 million for 9 games in the series), and Serious Sam (over $45 million for 11 games). The company's representatives noted that "gamers spend more time in well-known IPs than in new ones", and Devolver plans to respond to this trend by "actively developing its own popular franchises in various ways".

Interestingly, five of Devolver Digital's top ten most profitable franchises already have sequels announced, including Astroneer, Enter the Gungeon, The Talos Principle, Gorn, and Stronghold (which has two upcoming games - Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition, which will be released this July, and the new Stronghold on Unreal Engine 5).

In its future strategy, Devolver Digital plans to focus on releasing more paid DLC (after the successful add-ons for Cult of the Lamb and Astroneer last year), publishing new "definitive" versions of its games, and developing numerous sequels to both its own and third-party popular IPs.

The company also intends to reduce the average investment in third-party projects, focusing on games with smaller budgets but high potential for success and the possibility of releasing future paid DLC. In addition, Devolver will "optimise" its three subsidiaries, giving them a "clearer focus" and reducing the size of their respective teams by about 50%.

An important focus will also be investing in in-house development to increase time and cost efficiency, as well as working with Nintendo to develop games for the Switch 2, as the original Switch is the "most successful console in terms of copies sold" for Devolver Digital.

Devolver Digital's current release schedule for 2025 and beyond includes such anticipated titles as Baby Steps, Enter the Gungeon 2, Skate Story, Tenjutsu, Forestrike, Monster Train 2, and Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions. So, it seems that fans of indie hits will find many more interesting surprises and sequels to their favourite stories from this publisher.
