Valve's Steam Controller 2 launches May 4 at $99 — here's what makes it different

Valve has officially confirmed the Steam Controller 2 launches on May 4 at $99 in the US and £85 in the UK, making it the priciest mainstream gamepad in its class. That's $24 more than Sony's DualSense and $34 more than Microsoft's Xbox Wireless Controller — a gap Valve says reflects both unique hardware and higher logistics costs.

The hardware case

The headline feature is a pair of TMR (Tunneling Magnetoresistance) magnetic thumbsticks. Unlike the Hall-effect and potentiometer-based sticks used in most controllers, TMR is designed to resist stick drift over the long term. Alongside those sticks sit two 34.5mm square trackpads with tactile feedback and adjustable click pressure — a direct carry-over from the original 2015 Steam Controller, refined here. Four rear grip buttons, six-axis gyro, four rumble motors, and capacitive grip sensors round out the spec sheet.

Battery life is rated at over 35 hours per charge. The wireless dongle — called the Steam Controller Puck — doubles as a magnetic charging dock and can connect up to four controllers simultaneously. Wireless input latency sits at roughly 8 ms, which is competitive with wired alternatives for most use cases.

What it's missing

Not everything lands cleanly at this price. There's no 3.5mm headphone jack, the thumbstick height isn't adjustable, and the plastic body lacks rubber grip texturing — a criticism flagged by Tom's Hardware. Valve has acknowledged the smooth surface, though GameStar notes it's a step up from the notoriously slippery 2015 original.

The plastic body has a matte finish — an improvement over the 2015 model, though it still lacks rubber grip texturing.

One meaningful addition: Valve has partnered with iFixit, meaning replacement parts will be available for user repairs. That separates the Steam Controller 2 from the $200 DualSense Edge and $180 Xbox Elite Series 2, which are effectively sealed units, and gives it a longevity argument the spec sheet alone can't make.

Stock and what else is coming

Valve says a large initial batch is ready, but warns that high day-one demand could mean not everyone gets one immediately. US buyers can order via the Steam Store from 10 AM PT on May 4; UK buyers can order from 6 PM BST. The controller works with any device that runs Steam — Windows, Linux, SteamOS, and the Steam Deck.

The Steam Machine console and Steam Frame VR headset, both delayed by a DRAM shortage, still have no firm release date. Valve senior engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais told VGC that announcements on both are expected soon.
