Call of Duty returns to Nintendo for the first time in 13 years

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2026 — the first time the franchise has appeared on a Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U back in 2013. That 13-year gap ends with a native port, not a cloud-streaming workaround, and Infinity Ward says the heavy lifting is already done.

The port

Director Jack O'Hara told VGC that the main porting work is complete and went "pretty smooth" with no serious technical hurdles. The remaining months before release will go toward polish and performance optimization. O'Hara has personal history here — he previously worked on CoD ports for Nintendo hardware at studio n-Space, which gives him a grounded read on what the Switch 2 can actually handle.

The Switch 2 version is being built by Digital Legends Entertainment alongside Infinity Ward, and it's a native build running on the hardware directly. Multiplayer and cross-play were specifically tested, and O'Hara says Switch 2 players will be able to connect with those on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC without performance issues during matches.

What this means

The skepticism is reasonable. Ghosts on Wii U was poorly received, and plenty of players have doubted whether a handheld-dockable console can run a modern AAA military shooter without meaningful compromises. O'Hara's confidence is notable, but independent hands-on testing hasn't surfaced yet — that will matter more than any developer quote when the game ships.

The port also fulfills a commitment Microsoft made to regulators during its $69 billion Activision acquisition. Bringing Call of Duty to Nintendo was a condition of that deal, and MW4 on Switch 2 is the clearest proof yet that Microsoft intends to follow through per Nintendo Wire.

When and how to buy

Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net, Microsoft Store), and Switch 2. There are no versions for PS4 or Xbox One. Pre-orders for console and PC are open now. Switch 2 pre-orders are coming "later this summer" — no exact date confirmed yet, and pricing for the Switch 2 edition hasn't been announced.
