Tesla made an official retractable sunshade for the Model Y — but only China gets it
Tesla has quietly launched an official retractable sunshade for the Model Y in China, priced at 1,499 yuan (about $236), and it's not available anywhere else. The product targets a real frustration — the panoramic glass roof that turns the cabin into a greenhouse in summer — but buyers in the US and UK are left waiting with no confirmed launch date.
The hardware
The sunshade mounts on a built-in roller mechanism designed to sit flush with the headliner fabric, matching the ceiling color so the interior looks untouched when closed. A metal handle drives the mechanism, and Tesla claims it runs quietly — a deliberate dig at third-party alternatives that tend to develop squeaks after a few months of road use. The full kit includes the sunshade, a fitting tool, and trim clips for the mounting points. Tesla recommends two people for installation, given the precision required.
Compatibility is narrow: the sunshade only fits Model Y vehicles produced from February 2025 onward — that's the Juniper refresh. Earlier Model Y builds don't have the structural changes needed to accept the roller mount in the roof frame.
The safety angle
Tesla put the accessory through crash testing and verified it won't interfere with side curtain airbag deployment. That's a meaningful distinction from cheaper aftermarket options, where airbag compatibility is rarely documented. The safety certification makes this feel like a considered OEM product rather than a rushed accessories-store listing.
What US and UK buyers can do now
The Tesla US Shop currently stocks only a removable mesh shade — clip-mounted, 80% light blocking, no roller mechanism. It's a different category of product entirely. The aftermarket has already moved faster: brands like EVBASE Retractable Sunshade, Hansshow, and Yeslak offer manual and electric retractable systems for the Juniper in the $400–$800 range, and have done so since the refresh launched. Tesla's official version undercuts all of them on price — if it ever makes it to Western markets.
There's no regulatory pressure pushing Tesla to bring the product to the US or EU, and no timeline has been announced. China remains Tesla's priority market for localized comfort features, and this accessory fits that pattern. For now, Model Y Juniper owners outside China have the aftermarket or nothing.
