A Minecraft Movie Squared is official — Kirsten Dunst joins for July 2027
The sequel to A Minecraft Movie now has a name, a date, and a new star. Warner Bros. and Legendary confirmed A Minecraft Movie Squared will hit theaters on July 23, 2027 — roughly two years after the original earned $960 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, making it the third-highest-grossing video game film ever. For fans of the first film, this is a direct continuation rather than a reboot.

The new addition
Kirsten Dunst joins the cast as Alex, the iconic female protagonist from the game and the counterpart to Jack Black's Steve. The casting — announced on May 30, 2026 during Minecraft Live — is a notable step up in star power. Dunst is an Oscar nominee best known for dramatic roles like Melancholia and the original Spider-Man trilogy, signaling that the sequel is aiming for a slightly broader audience than the first film managed to attract.
Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Matt Berry are all returning. Director Jared Hess is back too, alongside original writer Chris Galletta. Production is already underway in New Zealand, with Weta FX — the Wellington-based visual effects house behind the first film — again handling the VFX work.
The gang is back and blockier than ever.

Worth noting
The original film had a complicated reception: critics were largely unimpressed, but audiences turned up anyway, driving that near-billion-dollar gross. The sequel doubles down on the same formula rather than redesigning it, which makes sense given the numbers. What's new is the promise of unexplored biomes, new mobs, and fresh characters — details that should land well with the Minecraft community, which remains one of gaming's most active fanbases.
The July 2027 slot currently has no direct competition from other video game adaptations, giving Warner Bros. a clear run at the summer box office. Plot details and first footage are expected later, per Variety.
