Samsung's first new SmartTag in three years could arrive this September

Samsung hasn't updated its SmartTag tracker lineup since October 2023, and that gap is starting to show. A leak from Roland Quandt, a German tipster with a strong track record, suggests the SmartTag 3 will arrive alongside the Galaxy S26 FE — most likely in September 2026. No specs, no pricing, and no word from Samsung itself yet.

The leak

Quandt posted on Bluesky on July 10 that the SmartTag 3 is "coming soon, likely launching alongside S26 FE." The Galaxy S FE line historically lands in September or October, making a July 22 Galaxy Unpacked appearance — where Samsung is expected to focus on foldables — unlikely. Android Authority backs the September timeline as the more credible window.

The Galaxy wall

The current SmartTag 2 is a capable tracker: a single battery lasts 500 to 700 days, it retails for around $50, and a built-in loop makes it easy to clip to keys or a bag. The problem is exclusivity. It only works with Samsung Galaxy phones — no iPhones, no Google Pixels, no other Android devices. That puts it at a structural disadvantage against rivals that work across platforms.

Apple's AirTag 2, released in January 2026, now sells for £29 in the UK (down from £35) and uses a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip with 50% longer Precision Finding range and Apple Watch support, per Apple. Chipolo and Tile, meanwhile, offer cross-platform Find My compatibility on Android — open to Pixel owners and anyone outside Samsung's ecosystem.

What needs to change

Samsung's SmartThings Find network is Galaxy-only, and there's no indication that will change with SmartTag 3. If Samsung wants to compete seriously — especially against a cheaper, better-ranged AirTag 2 — opening the tracker to non-Galaxy Android phones would be the single most impactful move it could make. Whether that happens remains unknown. For now, SmartTag 3 is a rumour with a plausible date and no confirmed details.
