If you missed MOUSE: P.I. For Hire when it launched in April, here's a reason to pay attention: the game has sold over one million copies in less than three months. Developer Fumi Games and publisher PlaySide announced the milestone on July 13, confirming the title fully recouped its development costs and outperformed the company's own projections.

The pitch

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is a first-person shooter built around a very specific aesthetic: black-and-white 1930s Disney-style cartoons crossed with hard-boiled noir. You play as Detective Jack Pepper, voiced by Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Death Stranding), investigating a city of anthropomorphic animals. The game blends 2D character art with 3D environments, giving it a look that genuinely doesn't exist anywhere else in the genre.

That kind of ultra-niche visual hook is usually a commercial risk. Fumi Games — a small Polish indie studio — bet on it anyway, and the gamble paid off.

The numbers

Sales landed at an even 50/50 split between PC (Steam) and consoles — PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2 — per Gematsu, which published the official announcement. That balance across platforms is unusual for an indie title, where PC typically dominates.

Fumi Games CEO Mateusz Michalak called it a dream outcome for a project that started as a simple idea: "It all started as a simple idea for a shooter in the style of '30s cartoons, and it ended up gathering an audience we didn't even dream of."

The game holds a Metacritic score of 80, and player retention after launch has been stronger than expected for a game whose appeal rests heavily on its visual identity.

What's next

Physical editions for PS5 and Switch 2 — including a premium Mouseburg Edition — launched on July 10, reports Push Square. A recent update added a Level Revisit feature, letting players return to completed stages. A story DLC is in the works with no release date announced yet.

If you're on the fence, the combination of a strong Metacritic score, sustained post-launch support, and a genuinely distinctive style makes it one of the more interesting indie releases of the year.
