MouthPad is a tongue-controlled trackpad that just went on sale for $1,400
A startup called Augmental has put its tongue-controlled trackpad, MouthPad, on sale in the US for $1,400. The device fits against the roof of the mouth and lets users move a cursor, click, and trigger keyboard shortcuts entirely through tongue and head movements. More than 100 people with mobility challenges already use it daily — some for up to 16 hours straight — after years of private beta testing.
What it is
MouthPad sits against the palate like a retainer and reads tongue gestures through a built-in touchpad. It connects wirelessly to macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. The second-generation model, released in early 2026, added tongue-triggered keyboard shortcuts and a WASD remap for gaming — expanding it beyond basic cursor control. The whole unit weighs 10 grams and runs for 7-plus hours on a charge, with a roughly 90-minute recharge time. A two-pack is available for $1,900.
Augmental says users can reach several hundred precise clicks per minute after just a few hours of practice. The company positions the device as an alternative to a standard mouse for people living with limb loss, hand dysfunction, or neurological conditions including paralysis.
The catch
Getting one isn't straightforward. Augmental requires a custom dental scan performed by a certified dentist familiar with the device — the fit has to be precise to work correctly. The company covers the scan cost, but right now that dentist network only exists in the United States. No European partner network or expansion timeline has been confirmed, so UK buyers are out of luck for now.
The eye-tracking market — Tobii and Irisbond are the established names — already offers hands-free input, but Augmental argues that tongue control reduces eye fatigue and is more discreet in everyday use. MouthPad isn't currently classified as a medical device, which keeps it off prescription pathways but also means no NHS or insurance reimbursement routes exist yet, per Digital Trends.
Who it's for right now
At $1,400 this is a niche purchase, and the dental logistics make it US-only for the foreseeable future. But for people who genuinely can't use a standard mouse or trackpad, there are very few proportional-control alternatives at any price.
