Razer's $90 Snake Keycap Is Pure Collector Bait — and It Blocks Your RGB
Razer is selling a single keyboard keycap for $89.99 — and it does almost nothing a keycap is supposed to do. The Artisan Keycap – Triple-Headed Snake Edition goes on sale August 22 at 7pm PT (3am BST August 23) exclusively via Razer.com and RazerStores in limited quantities. If you care about Razer's track record with limited drops, that last detail matters.
The object
The keycap is hand-cast from resin and hand-painted to replicate Razer's triple-headed snake logo in three dimensions. Each unit goes through a two-stage quality check — a 3D model comparison followed by a surface defect inspection — which Razer says makes every piece unique. It fits any mechanical keyboard with cross-stem (MX-style) switches, so it's not locked to Razer hardware.

The practical reality: the solid resin body blocks RGB backlighting completely. The 3D snake protrudes roughly 1.7cm above the key surface, which rules it out for anything you actually press during a game. Razer suggests mounting it on F12 — a key most players rarely touch — and that framing tells you everything about what this product is. It's merchandise, not a peripheral.

The collector angle
Razer hasn't disclosed how many units it's producing, which is a shift from previous drops — both the Boomslang 20th Anniversary (1,337 units, $1,337 MSRP) and the Huntsman Signature Edition (1,337 units, $500 MSRP) had explicit numbered runs. Without a published unit count, the scarcity narrative is harder to verify. That said, ResellCalendar notes the Boomslang reached ~$2,000 on eBay within days of launch, and the Huntsman Signature traded at $700–$800 against its $500 retail price.
No major competitor — Corsair, SteelSeries, Logitech — has entered the $90-plus single-keycap space. Artisan keycap makers like Drop and Dwarf Factory operate at similar price points, but this is Razer's first move into the category.
