Metro 2039 gets a stunning gameplay trailer at Gamescom 2026
Ukrainian-Maltese developer 4A Games debuted a full gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 at Gamescom 2026's Opening Night Live on August 25, giving the clearest look yet at a game that already hit 1 million Steam wishlists faster than any other Embracer Group title. The game is confirmed for February 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
New face, familiar tunnels
The series' longtime protagonist Artyom is out. Metro 2039 introduces The Stranger, a new fully voiced character who returns to the Moscow Metro to hunt down the leader of an authoritarian faction called the Novoreich. That leader — known as the Führer — is Hunter, a former member of the elite Spartan order. The underground stations and passages fans know from Metro 2033 and Metro Exodus are back, now packed with tens of thousands of survivors living under a brutal new regime.
The trailer showed off the game's signature atmosphere: tight corridors, oppressive lighting, and the kind of environmental storytelling the series does well. 4A Games also confirmed that Metro 2039's deep weapon customisation system returns — players can swap barrels, scopes, stocks, and ammo types on the fly to adapt to different combat situations.
The studio context
4A Games operates out of Malta with a predominantly Ukrainian team, continuing development throughout the ongoing war — a fact that gives the story's authoritarian-regime themes an uncomfortable real-world weight. Publisher Deep Silver (Embracer Group) remains committed to the release. A playable demo is on the Gamescom floor in Hall 9.1 through August 30, with hardware from NVIDIA, AOC, and Turtle Beach on hand.
At the show, developers also unveiled the Collector's Edition live on stage: its centrepiece is a full-size replica helmet worn by Novoreich warriors. Pricing and retailer details haven't been announced yet.
February 2027
The release window puts Metro 2039 in a busy AAA season, but the franchise has a loyal audience — the 4A Games Studio Update confirms this remains the studio's core project. Game Pass availability has not been confirmed despite ongoing Microsoft-Xbox discussions. Pre-orders are live on Steam and the Epic Games Store now.
