GTA 6's dual protagonists, survival stats, and RDR2-style NPCs — Rockstar spills the details
Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar is finally talking about what's actually inside it. Dazed (original) scored an exclusive developer interview revealing the game's core mechanics — dual protagonists with instant switching, returning survival stats, and an NPC system richer than anything the studio has built before. Standard Edition is priced at $79.99 / £69.99, with pre-orders already live.

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos — GTA 6's dual protagonists can be switched instantly, even mid-chase.
Jason & Lucia
For the first time in the franchise's history, GTA has two permanent playable protagonists — Jason Duval, a former military man turned drug courier, and Lucia Caminos, a hand-to-hand combat specialist fresh out of prison. The Bonnie-and-Clyde framing puts their relationship front and centre, and their romantic storyline is treated as a major narrative thread rather than an afterthought.
The switching mechanic goes further than GTA V's version. Players can flip between characters mid-action — driving as Jason, then instantly pulling up Lucia's in-game social media feed with a single button press. The two don't need to be physically together, and can operate on entirely separate tasks at the same time.

The Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic between Jason and Lucia is central to GTA 6's story.
Body clocks and gym sessions
Survival mechanics return from San Andreas. Food intake affects both characters' weight directly, gym sessions build visible muscle mass, and neglecting sleep accumulates fatigue that hits performance. Rockstar is treating the protagonists' physical states as persistent systems rather than cosmetic sliders.
Leonida, not a Florida postcard
The fictional state of Leonida is modelled on Florida, but Rockstar pushed hard against easy stereotypes. Developers studied Miami on the ground, interviewing former inmates, party promoters, and a wide cross-section of local people. Many NPCs are based on real individuals the team met during research.

Leonida's streets are modelled on Florida, with NPCs drawn from real people Rockstar met during Miami research.
The crowd and the consequences
NPC variety is the biggest visual leap. Pedestrians now differ in age, body type, clothing, tattoos, piercings, and individual movement animations — no two characters move or react the same way. Rockstar more than doubled its headcount after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped, and that scale shows here.
The context-sensitive interaction system is borrowed directly from RDR2. Players approach any NPC and choose to engage rudely or politely — both paths branch into unpredictable outcomes. A full moral choice system sits underneath, with consequences described as deeper than anything in Rockstar's previous work.
No PC release date has been confirmed; expect 2027 at the earliest. Game Pass day-one inclusion has not been announced. Physical copies with download codes arrive November 12 for pre-loading, per TechRadar pricing.
