Insider published details about Snapdragon Wear 5100 chip, SoC will still use old Cortex-A53 cores

German insider Roland Quandt has obtained the specifications of the new Qualcomm processor for wearable devices.

What is known

The novelty will be called Snapdragon Wear 5100. If the leak is to be believed, the SoC will use four old Cortex-A53 cores. By comparison, the Exynos W920 chip, which stands Samsung Announces Galaxy Watch 4 and Unveils One UI Watch - New OS for Wear OS-Based Smartwatches, uses two Cortex-A55 cores. According to ARM, they are 18% more efficient and 15% more energy efficient than Cortex-A53 cores.

According to an insider, Qualcomm is currently testing several variants of the chip. One comes with 2GB of RAM and 8GB or 16GB of storage. The novelty is also credited with an improved AON coprocessor that will handle simple background tasks. For example, counting steps and updating the Always On screen. If necessary, it will consume less power than the main CPU cores. Of interest, the SoC will still support two cameras - one at 5 MP and one at 16 MP. They are usually used in children's smartwatches. 

Unfortunately there is no information about the new product's process yet. It is also unknown when Qualcomm plans to introduce the chip. It is possible that it will be shown at the end of the year.
