Abigail, a 14-year-old artist, created a collection of Belugies cartoon whales and sold it as an NFT for more than $1 million.

What's known

The artist's brother Adam, who works as a trader, helped create the collection. They began working on the Belugies series in September 2021. First the girl drew a cartoon white whale and then 167 accessories, including glasses, fur coats and more.

Then Abigail and Adam determined the rarity of all the jewelry. In particular, the rarity of the fur coats was 0.1%. They turned to a third-party developer to automate the process. He helped to divide the picture into several layers - the whale itself, the background and the accessories.

A special script was used to combine backgrounds and details. As a result, the Belugies collection included 8,000 pictures. Most of them were created using iPhone 8 smartphone. The 20 cartoon whales have become legendary, i.e. their decorations are not found in the rest of the Belugies.

The Candy Machine tool was used to create the NFT store. It binds images and metadata to token Solana. They started selling the images on the Alpha Art marketplace. Adam, on the other hand, chose Solana over Ethereum because of the lower throughput, which is about 40,000 transactions every second.

Belugies collection was put up for sale on October 16. The non-interchangeable token was priced at 0.8 SOL or $160. All the pictures were sold out in about 10 hours, and the income exceeded $1 million, with Abigail receiving additional revenue if the tokens were resold.

20% of earnings, $200,000, donated to charity. $100,000 is donated to non-profit organizations dedicated to helping whales. The same amount Adam and Abigail gave to The Sunshine Kids, an organization for children with cancer.
