Ai nemesis: which game's digital brain gives you the biggest headache?

I've been wondering lately, which game truly has the most intelligent AI for enemies? I'm talking about AI that adapts to your playstyle, doesn't let you cheese it, and actually feels like it's thinking. Any experiences or insights?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned The Last of Us Part II yet. The enemy AI communicates, flanks, and reacts to your actions in really smart ways. Plus, those dogs...

Alien: Isolation, hands down. That xenomorph learns from your tactics and adjusts its hunting patterns. Hide in lockers too much? It'll start checking them more often. It's downright terrifying how smart it feels.

Agreed! I still have nightmares about that thing. The way it would pretend to leave and then suddenly rush back... pure evil genius.

F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) was way ahead of its time. The enemies use squad tactics, flank you, and communicate with each other. It's old now, but still impressive.

Metal Gear Solid V has some pretty clever AI. If you keep headshotting enemies, they start wearing helmets. Use too many sleeping darts? They'll equip gas masks. It's all about adapting to your playstyle.

Don't forget about the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor/War. While not traditional AI, the way enemies remember you and adapt is brilliant.

True, but that's more of a clever game mechanic than actual AI behavior during combat. Still cool though!

Chess engines. Checkmate, humans!

Lol, true. But I think OP meant in action/strategy games, not pure logic games.

Halo on Legendary difficulty. Those Elites will make you question your life choices.

Good... Aug. 10, 2024, 3:16 p.m.

I'd argue for the Director AI in Left 4 Dead 2. It's not individual enemy AI, but the way it manages pacing and difficulty based on how you're playing is pretty brilliant.

What about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? The A-Life system was super ambitious for its time, simulating a whole ecosystem of mutants and stalkers.

BlackCat Aug. 11, 2024, 1:07 a.m.

Good call! Though I heard a lot of that system got scaled back for the final release. Still impressive though.

Sometimes the "smartest" AI isn't the most fun to play against. There's a sweet spot between challenging and frustrating that game devs have to hit.

Totally agree. I remember reading about how they had to dumb down the AI in F.E.A.R. because playtesters found it too difficult when the enemies were using perfect tactics.

Tried speedrunning dark souls but the bosses started delaying their attacks just to throw off my timing. AI learning or am i trippin?
