Scientists live-streamed the flash of one of the brightest supernovae of the past decade

Everyone could see in real time last week the flash of one of the biggest and brightest supernovae of the past 10 years. It was streamed live on YouTube.

Here's What We Know

The supernova is called SN 2023ixf. It's located in the M101 galaxy. By the way, that's also where the Big Dipper is located. The supernova was observed using robotic telescopes that have been installed in Rome.

Exploding star was first noticed on May 19 this year. The photo was taken by Japanese supernova hunter Koichi Itagaki. The following day, scientists from California confirmed the discovery.

SN 2023ixf is about 20 million years away, which is quite close by cosmic standards. Scientists plan to study the supernova in more detail with more sophisticated equipment, including the Hubble telescope.
