AI helped 'extract' John Lennon's voice from an old demo tape for The Beatles to release their latest song

The legendary band The Beatles promise to release their new and final song this year. And it wouldn't have happened without artificial intelligence.

Details

One of the band's founding members, Paul McCartney, told Radio 4 that the song is an old one which was recorded by the late John Lennon decades ago. It is most likely a 1978 Lennon composition called Now and Then. It was one of several "For Paul" cassette tapes that Lennon recorded shortly before his death in 1980, which were later given to McCartney by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono.

A demo version of the song was recorded on a boombox in Lennon's New York flat, accompanied by a piano. The Beatles wanted to release it earlier, but the quality of the recording made it impossible.

Now the musicians used artificial intelligence, which was able to "extract" John Lennon's voice and "separate" it from the sounds of the piano and extraneous noise. As a result, the song will be released later this year.
