Guidance units of the newest Russian missiles "Tornado-S" have chips from AliExpress

The 9M544 guided missiles for the Russian Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems use consumer-grade components sold on AliExpress.

What we know

The 9M544 missiles are designed to destroy armored and unarmored vehicles. The guidance units very often remain intact after firing, so they can be examined, which is what the experts at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies have done.

Representatives of the Center are searching for imported components in Russian military equipment and weapons, which are used in the war with Ukraine, despite the sanctions against Russia. In the guidance unit of 9M544 missiles several elements were found which are not manufactured in Russia:

• microcontrollers in TSOP66 package;
• SMD capacitors;
• SMA and DB15 connectors;
• microcontrollers in LQF64 package.

All these components are designed for use in civil and domestic machinery. They do not meet military standards. Russia can buy such components on AliExpress, circumventing Western sanctions.
