South Korea has allocated land to the United States for the THAAD missile defense system

It looks like the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea will be fully deployed after all.

Here's What We Know

The country's government has completed the procedures for allocating a plot of land to the United States. The THAAD missile defense system will be installed in North Gyeongsang Province.

As part of measures to normalize the High Altitude Area Defense, South Korean authorities have allocated 730,000 square meters of land, including 330,000 square meters reported five years ago. By March 2023, President Yoon Suk Yeol's administration plans to prepare an environmental impact assessment report on the missile defense complex.

The new government announced plans to expand the use of THAAD in the summer of 2022. The Chinese authorities reacted immediately, stressing that such a step may disrupt the balance of power and cause conflicts in the region. Previously, South Korea refrained from expanding THAAD, adhering to the "Three No's" policy. It includes refraining from the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, preventing the United States from joining the country's missile defense system and refusing to form a military alliance with Japan and the United States.
