The U.S. Navy has decided on a name for the future amphibious amphibious assault ship class America, which will be built by the company HII.

Here's What We Know

As usual, the name for the amphibious assault ship was chosen after one of the battles of the Marine Corps. U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro officially announced Dec. 13 that the ship will be named USS Fallujah in honor of the First and Second Battles for Fallujah during the 2004 Iraq War.

The America-class amphibious ships are intended to replace the Tarawa ships. Their advantage will be the ability to carry Bell MV-22 Osprey convertorcrafts and fifth-generation F-35B lightning II fighters with vertical takeoff and landing.

The US Navy wants to get five America-class ships. Moreover, the name for the fifth has not been invented yet. USS America (on photo) and USS Tripoli have already entered service, while USS Bougainville is under construction. The cost of USS Fallujah will be $2.4 billion.
