Rheinmetall and Elbit Systems have announced the successful firing test of the L52 wheeled artillery system. The test took place in March this year at the Shivta firing range in Israel. The test was attended by high-ranking guests from the UK, German, Dutch and Hungarian armed forces.

Here's What We Know

German and Israeli companies have signed an agreement to jointly develop, produce and sell the self-propelled artillery unit in 2022. The UK and Hungary have already shown interest in the new weapon.

The howitzer is equipped with a 155mm L52 cannon. The chassis used is the RMMV HX (pictured above), a highly mobile 10x10 tactical truck. It is designed by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles. The vehicle has a well-protected cab and electronics for the fire control unit.

The German manufacturer is already working on the integration of new guns in the future. In particular, the artillery unit will be equipped with the L52 cannon upgraded to A1 level, after which it will receive the L60 cannon.

The L60 is currently under development. The maximum firing range will be 83 km. This is in line with the German Armed Forces programme called Zukünftiges System Indirektiges Feuer Mittlerer Reichweite. The project aims to increase the range of German artillery.
