Li Xiang, founder of Li Auto, has called on social media to standardise Chinese terminology for levels of autonomous driving, warning that current marketing practices are misleading consumers about the capabilities of their cars.

Here's What We Know

Li Xiang posted a call on social media, "I call on media and industry organisations to standardise terminology for autonomous driving. Terms like L2 and L3 are incomprehensible to users - they are just technical jargon."

Li Auto's founder suggested a simplified naming system:

L2 = Driving Assistance
L3 = Automated Driving Assistance
L4 = Autonomous Driving
L5 = Unmanned Driving

He emphasised that "no extra characters should be added" to avoid exaggerated claims that could mislead users.

The call comes amid growing concern that marketing hyperbole about the capabilities of autonomous driving systems is leading to accidents as drivers overestimate the capabilities of their cars. Several high-profile accidents have occurred when drivers mistakenly believed their cars could drive fully autonomously, highlighting the gap between marketing claims and the reality of the technology.
