Rumour: Sony is preparing a major PSSR update for PlayStation 5 Pro that will add 4K support at 120 FPS

Sony is rumoured to be working on a major update to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, which is key to the PS5 Pro. The updated version of PSSR 2 promises to significantly improve image quality and performance, allowing games to run in 4K at 120 frames per second and even in 8K at 60 FPS.
Here's What We Know
PSSR is Sony's proprietary upscaling technology, similar to NVIDIA DLSS, which renders a game in low resolution and then uses artificial intelligence to upscale the picture quality to near-native 4K. This technology is already being used in many PS5 games, such as Assassin's Creed Shadows, where it helps to maintain a smooth 60 frames per second without losing detail.
According to information from the well-known YouTube channel Moore's Law Is Dead, Sony is preparing a large-scale rebranding of PSSR, which can actually be considered PSSR 2.0. This version will be so powerful that developers will be able to give preference to low output resolutions to significantly improve performance, and the updated upscaler will compensate for image quality.
One of the key breakthroughs is the support for a stable 120 FPS in 4K, as well as 60 FPS in 8K, which is a major step forward compared to the current capabilities of the PS5 Pro. In addition, the PSSR 2 will support a variety of output resolutions, from 1080p to 1440p, paving the way for even smoother gameplay.
Sony engineers are also working on replacing traditional TAA anti-aliasing with a more efficient algorithm that will provide clearer and more detailed images without typical artefacts.
PlayStation Chief Architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PSSR update will not require any changes to the PS5 Pro hardware, as the console is already equipped with powerful machine learning capabilities. Sony is also working with AMD to create a unified AI-based upscaling architecture that will be used not only in consoles but also in other devices.
It is worth remembering that developers will have to integrate this technology into their games to make full use of PSSR 2, so not all projects will immediately receive a noticeable improvement. Nevertheless, the PS5 Pro with the updated upscaler can become a serious competitor to even powerful gaming PCs, especially in terms of supporting high frame rates at 4K.
