Japanese company Toyoda Gosei has developed and introduced a new technology for recycling plastic recovered from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) in response to stricter environmental regulations. The new material contains up to 50 per cent recycled polypropylene, but has the same impact resistance and durability as virgin plastics.

Here's What We Know

Such characteristics were achieved thanks to Toyoda Gosei's own material modification technology, as well as co-operation with Isono, which supplies high-quality recycled raw materials.

The new type of plastic will be used for the first time in elements of the car interior, for example, in glove compartments. The first model with this material will be the Toyota Camry sedan.

Toyoda Gosei claims that this is the world's first use of recycled plastic with such a high ELV content in impact-resistant automotive components. The manufacturer emphasises that the technology allows horizontal recycling: the raw material is used in the same types of parts from which it was extracted. This feature contributes to the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the formation of a closed production chain.

In the future, the new material will be used more widely in design elements and even structural parts of cars.
