NASA's CAPSTONE 02 will send two robot spacecraft to chase each other around the Moon
NASA has announced CAPSTONE 02, a 2027 mission that will send two identical 400kg spacecraft to practice autonomous rendezvous near the Moon. The contract, worth between $20 million and $60 million, goes to Advanced Space — the Colorado company that ran the original CAPSTONE mission. The hardware comes from Terran Orbital, now a Lockheed Martin subsidiary. The goal: prove that spacecraft can find, approach, and station-keep relative to each other in deep space without a human in the loop.
Why autonomous docking matters here
Earth-to-Moon communication has a roughly 2.4-second round-trip delay. That doesn't sound like much until you're trying to dock a fuel tanker to a lunar outpost — at which point even a brief lag can turn a precision maneuver into a collision. CAPSTONE 02 addresses this directly by testing three NASA autonomous navigation software suites alongside the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System (CAPS). The two spacecraft will swap roles: one plays the stationary target while the other closes the distance autonomously, then they switch.
These maneuvers — formally called Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) — are a prerequisite for any sustained human presence beyond low Earth orbit. Future Moon bases, orbital fuel depots, and crew transfer vehicles all depend on spacecraft that can rendezvous without waiting for a go-ahead from mission control.
A big step up from the original
The first CAPSTONE launched in 2022 as a 25kg CubeSat — roughly the size of a microwave oven. Its job was to validate the near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO) that NASA plans to use for the Artemis Gateway station. It performed so well that it kept operating until June 2026, well past its planned 18-month life. CAPSTONE 02 is 16 times heavier, which buys room for proper propulsion, more capable avionics, and a high-precision optical imaging payload from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. That camera serves double duty: navigation aid during close approaches, and a tool for capturing detailed images of the lunar surface.
What comes next
The mission feeds directly into NASA's Artemis architecture, particularly the Gateway lunar space station. Whether Gateway survives ongoing budget reviews in its current form, the autonomous rendezvous technology CAPSTONE 02 validates will be essential for any future cislunar logistics — resupply runs, crew transfers, or in-space refueling.
