STALKER 2's Cost of Hope DLC launches August 20 — here's what's new
STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is getting its first major story expansion, Cost of Hope, on August 20, 2026 at 15:00 CEST (14:00 BST / 10:00 ET). GSC Game World confirmed the exact time via a countdown timer on the official site. For PS5 owners who sat out the base game's Xbox timed exclusivity, this one arrives on all platforms simultaneously from day one.
The new zones
Cost of Hope unlocks two areas that were sealed off in the base game: the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant administrative buildings and the Iron Forest. Both become fully explorable hubs with new quests and activities. The expansion's central storyline revisits the long-running conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions — two stalker groups that can't agree on how the Zone should be controlled. New weapons are in, and so is a functional binocular, something fans have been requesting since launch.
On the character side, Mavka makes her first playable appearance — she's been mentioned in the series but never on-screen. Zulu, a returning figure from STALKER: Call of Pripyat, also shows up, per Game Informer.

Price and platforms
Cost of Hope lands on PC (Steam, Epic, GOG), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 simultaneously. Ultimate Edition owners get it at no extra cost. A standalone price hasn't been confirmed by GSC yet — estimates from outlets put it around $20 / £15–20, though that remains unverified. A Season Pass covers both planned story expansions if you want to lock in the second one too.
The same day brings a free update — version 2.0 — which upgrades the game's engine from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4. That's a significant rebuild and could improve performance for players who found the base game rough on mid-range hardware. It also gives lapsed players a concrete reason to return before diving into the new content.
