Earlier this month, a Ukrainian AN-124 aircraft delivered the first modernised Protector RG Mk1 drone to the UK. Three weeks later, it was handed over to the Royal Air Force.

Here's What We Know

The ceremony took place at Waddington Air Base, where the 31st Squadron of the UK Royal Air Force will be stationed. It was the first unit to receive the new US drone.

The Protector RG Mk1 is a reconnaissance and strike drone. It can carry Brimstone missiles and Paveway bombs. The integration of these weapons was made possible through the use of BAE Systems' weapon system.

The new UAV is based on the MQ-9B SkyGuardian. The UK has ordered 16 drones. The Protector RG Mk1 is a replacement for the MQ-9 Reaper. It is scheduled to reach initial operational capability in 2025.

Although the Protector RG Mk1 has already been handed over to the UK Royal Air Force, it will be operational in about a year. Before that, the drone will undergo a series of tests at Waddington Base, which will include satellite communications checks and flights.
