Having put an epic end to the history of Baldur's Gate 3 with the release of the massive Update 8 in April, the developers from Larian Studios have officially said goodbye to their project and are now focused on future projects. The head of the studio, Sven Winke, shared his thoughts on why the team ultimately decided to abandon the release of paid DLC for the critically acclaimed RPG, calling it a "boring" option.

Here's What We Know

For the first time, Winke talked about the possibility of DLC for Baldur's Gate 3 back in September 2023, about a month after the game's stunning release, which was recognised by both critics and players. At the time, he noted that expanding the base game would be "very challenging" for the team, but "not impossible". However, just five months later, all fans' hopes for DLC were dashed when Winke confirmed that the studio would be "moving on", meaning no DLC and no Baldur's Gate 4.

"We're not a company that was created to develop DLC and add-ons," he explained, "We've tried to do that several times. And every time we failed - it's not our thing. Life is too short. Our ambitions are too big."

Now, in a new interview with GameSpot, Winke has touched upon the topic of DLC again. When asked why Larian eventually refused to create add-ons for Baldur's Gate 3, despite its huge success, he answered bluntly:

"It's boring, to be honest. We tried to do DLC, we talked about it for BG3... there's just no passion... I mean, a happy player is a happy business, but a happy player needs a happy developer. What we're doing now is making developers much happier."

"We heard that this is what we were supposed to do, right? You've got a huge game, a huge hit, and you have to do DLC here, DLC there, DLC everywhere... and the money will come pouring in! And we just nodded and said: "Yeah, we'll do DLC". And then, when we had time to think about it, we realised: "What are you doing?". Progressive understanding is not a bad thing, so sometimes you go down the wrong path and then you say: "Oh, fuck it," and you just change course."

As for what Larian is doing now that Baldur's Gate 3 is actually finished (except for fixing some bugs), it remains a mystery. In his interview with GameSpot, Winke only noted that the studio is "deep in the trenches" of its "next big project" - an "insanely ambitious" project that is "shaping up pretty well. And, of course, this is not the only thing Larian is working on, as Winke previously confirmed that a second project is also in the works. He acknowledged that it's "not the easiest thing in the universe because we're creating very complex games, with a lot of combinations and freedom of action for the players."
